Our Founder & CEO, Sarah Mosses, recently joined a panel of international distributors and sales agents for the ScreenUK Industry panel ‘The International Circulation of UK Films‘ at the Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival. This panel dug deep into how UK films travel across borders and the challenges they face in translating UK themes and issues to new audiences.
Hosted and moderated by Wendy Mitchell, Journalist, and Film Festival Consultant, Sarah appeared alongside Stephan De Potter, CEO of Cinéart, Stefano Massenzi, Head of Acquisitions of Lucky Red, and Fabien Westerhoff, CEO of FILM CONSTELLATION.
When responding to an audience question, Sarah stressed one of our key driving themes that “a film for everyone is a film for no-one”. Producers should also reference their audience targets in pitch materials to give buyers an indication that they understand who to market the film to.
Watch the full panel discussion below, now.
Another bit of advice for producers that Sarah shared during the panel was regarding the urgency of: ”Is the issue in the current time – what is the nuance of that story that is giving me [and audiences] new understanding of that issue? How is your film unique? I’m always analysing films on their issue merits and what makes your film current right now? Create the urgency of the narrative happening today.”
In a pitch deck this might look like facts and figures on the size of an issue, recent press articles about that issue, or leading advocates like Cate Blanchett speaking out for the rights of refugees.
Thank you to ScreenUK Industry for hosting this insightful panel!
