Conic has acquired UK-Ireland rights to Naqqash Khalid’s debut feature BIFA Nominated film IN CAMERA. The film has also been sold in Spain (FilmIn), Scandinavia, and the Baltics (Non-Stop Entertainment). Together Films will be presenting the film to additional buyers at Berlinale.
The film stars Nabhaan Rizwan (Mogul Mowgli, Station 11, Kaos), Amir El-Masry (Club Zero, Limbo), and Rory Fleck Byrne (The Foreigner, TV’s This Is Going To Hurt). It received widespread critical acclaim following its premieres at Karlovy Vary and London Film Festival and won the FIPRESCI prize at Thessaloniki.
Writer/director Naqqash Khalid was recognised as a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2020, and IN CAMERA features two performances from Screen Stars of Tomorrow: actors Nabhaan Rizwan (2019) and BAFTA-winning Amir El-Masry (2021), who were both nominated for BIFAs for their compelling performances in this striking debut.
Conic acquired the film from UK based sales agent Together Films and will be releasing IN CAMERA in UK cinemas in the summer of 2024, including a preview Q&A tour in key cities.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Conic for the release of IN CAMERA in the UK & Ireland. Following an award-winning festival run, we were keen to find a partner that would deliver a theatrical offer that honoured the big screen experience that Naqqash had created. The team at Conic understood the unique position of this film, and more importantly, the key themes that it speaks to.” said Sarah Mosses, Founder & CEO of Together Films.
“IN CAMERA is a brilliantly inventive British debut with an incredible central performance from Nabhaan Rizwan. Critics and festival audiences have been loving it and we’re now excited to be partnering with Together Films to bring this bold and ambitious piece of filmmaking to audiences in the UK and Ireland,” said Graham Fulton, Co-director of Conic.
The film is produced by Juliette Larthe/ Pure Phase Films as a first title for the UK arm of UK-US production firm Prettybird. The production is also the first film out of the gate for BAFTA-winning producer Mary Burke’s new production company Public Dreams.
IN CAMERA is financed by BBC Film and the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding), in association with Uncommon Creative Studio.
IN CAMERA follows Aden – played by Nabhaan Rizwan – a young actor who is in a cycle of nightmarish auditions. After he receives multiple rejections, Aden takes it upon himself to find a new part to play.
