In February 2024, we partnered with Fashion Roundtable to host a screening of the award-winning documentary, Fashion Reimagined, for UK policymakers.
2024 marks a pivotal year in UK and global politics with elections taking place in the UK and US. We have seen great movement around fashion industry policies internationally, including New York’s Fashion Act, and the recent EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles. With funding support from the Polden Puckham Foundation, we were able to put the film in front of UK politicians to encourage them to enact similar principles.
MPs, policy makers and members of the civil service were invited to watch the documentary at Curzon Victoria in London which follows Amy Powney, fashion designer of Mother of Pearl as she embarks on a journey to create a sustainable collection from farm to closet and answer the question – can fashion ever be sustainable?
The film was followed by a panel discussion with Tamara Cincik (CEO of Fashion Roundtable), Becky Hutner (Filmmaker for Fashion Reimagined), Jacqueline Farrell (Education Director at The Kings Foundation), and moderated by Kalkidan Legesse, (Sustainable Fashion Entrepreneur & Sustainability & Anti-Racism Consultant).
The discussion centred around policies related to the Creative Wellbeing Economy including tax incentives for local production, extended producer responsibility (EPR), regenerating high streets, the return of STEAM education, and the business, human rights and environment act. If you would like to read up on these policies in more detail please visit the Fashion Roundtable website.
One audience member stressed the value of showing Fashion Reimagined in more educational institutions so that young people are empowered with the knowledge to influence change. This is one of the reasons we organised a virtual screening with four major universities across the UK and an exclusive Q&A with Amy where students could pose their questions. If you work for an educational institution or a fashion retailer and would like to host a screening please complete our screening form here, and a member of the team will be in touch to support you.
