We’ve taken the knowledge and expertise from our Together Films Sales team and broken it down into easy-to-digest sections. Let’s dive in!
What is Film Distribution?
Film Distribution is the process of making films available to audiences through various channels, such as cinemas, streaming platforms, television broadcasts or community-hosted events. There are different types of distribution rights which include:
- Theatrical Rights: Exhibition of films in a cinema or theatre.
- Non-Theatrical Rights: Screening films in venues such as schools, museums, community centres, or universities. These screenings will be for educational, recreational, or cultural purposes.
- VOD Rights: Films that are shown as “video on demand” and in a world of evolving technology there are many! Subscription VOD (Netflix or Amazon Prime Video), Advertising VOD (YouTube or Tubi), Free VOD (BBC iPlayer) or Transactional VOD (iTunes or Google).
- Airline Rights: These rights allow the distribution of the film on aeroplanes.
What is the First Step in looking for Representation for Distribution?
The first step you should take when seeking distribution for your project is understanding who your audience is. Does your film have a specific core audience or is there a range of different groups that may resonate with it? Once you have identified your core demographics, take the time to research comparative films that are similar in style to your film and share a similar message. Find out the companies who acquired the distribution rights for these titles, and research their marketing strategies. It’s vital to find inspiration so you can find the right path for your film.
Filmmakers should think about marketing as soon as possible, and think about how you can build a community that can follow your film’s journey. Utilise social media, email, and creative content which is designed to nurture a following.
What is the Perfect Distribution Pitch to a Sales Agent?
Always come prepared to pitch your film to a sales agent with realistic goals and objectives for your film, including what types of distribution rights you are looking for. Visit our submissions page on our website to gain more information on what sales agents are looking for.
Director Jeanie Finlay had built her audience through the film’s social media pages and worked hard on fostering a community that connected with the social impact goals of her film, YOUR FAT FRIEND. One of these goals is for venues to publish their seat sizing for fat audiences so audience members feel valued in these spaces. Learn more about Jeanie’s film and campaign here.
What Challenges could Filmmakers face with Distributors?
Filmmakers often struggle with distribution because they don’t have clear information from their sales agents about where their film has been pitched and how much revenue it is making. It’s essential for filmmakers to carefully vet potential distributors and seek legal counsel to ensure that their interests are protected in distribution agreements.
How are Together Films involved with Distribution?
We believe film does not exist until an audience sees it. We make that happen! Our Founder and CEO, Sarah Mosses, set up the sales agency arm of Together Films to drive purpose and profit for films with an impact message. We are focused on releasing 8-12 premium titles per year, both fiction and non-fiction.
