Through The Night is the award-winning new film from Loira Limbal. It’s an intimate cinema verité portrait of three working mothers whose lives all intersect at a 24-hour daycare center: a mother working the overnight shift as an essential worker at a hospital; another holding down three jobs just to support her family; and a woman who for over two decades has cared for the children of parents with nowhere else to turn.
The UK has the second highest childcare costs in the world (OECD). All while 1 in 10 childcare providers officially live in poverty (Nursery World).
A recent petition calling for an independent review into childcare received over 110,000 signatures with organisers demanding that the government do more to ensure we have a childcare sector that works for families, children and the economy (Petition.org). With the recent UK lockdowns meaning that 65 percent of working mothers are now juggling working from home with caring commitments, childcare is likely to remain high on the agenda (TUC).
