Gay Games

A film by Cherish Oteka

Enter the fun and fabulous world of global LGBTQ+ sporting. Now in their 40th year, the Gay Games is the biggest LGBTQ+ sporting event in the world. For the first time, it’s taking place in non-white countries and embracing full self-identification – where trans athletes can compete in line with their gender identity and where some sports are completely mixed and non-binary.

Director: Cherish ‘Chez’ Oteka
Producers: Aleksandra Bilic, Jamie Clark
Co-Producer: Daniel Karslake

Enter the fun and fabulous world of global LGBTQ+ sporting. Now in their 40th year, the Gay Games are moving with the times. For the first time taking place in non-white countries and navigating their first year of full self-identification – where trans athletes can compete in line with their gender identity and where some sports are completely mixed and non-binary. The film will celebrate a global LGBTQ+ sporting event that is vibrant and uplifting but also acknowledge the varying levels of privilege and access that exist within the community. Here, something bigger than where you are from that unites the community; but with an understanding and sensitivity that people from different countries experience their identities in very different ways. GAY GAMES will explore the history of the games, the athletes and the organisers as they work through the complexities of delivering a ‘fair and inclusive’ sporting landscape while celebrating a much- needed space for LGBTQ+ affirming competition, one which many people have not realised even takes place until… NOW!
