TVO Docs has acquired the critically acclaimed documentary LIFE AFTER from award-winning director Reid Davenport, marking its Canadian broadcast premiere.
The film will debut digitally on Friday, October 3 at 9am ET on the TVO Docs YouTube channel, website and Smart TV app and on TVO’s broadcast channel in Ontario on Saturday, October 4 at 9pm ET.
The deal was negotiated by Jess Reilly (Together Films) and Shane Smith (TVO), expanding the film’s international footprint following its successful U.S. theatrical release and ahead of upcoming launches with the PBS documentary series Independent Lens (U.S.) and Madman Entertainment (Australia/New Zealand).
LIFE AFTER is a gripping investigative documentary that exposes the tangled web of moral dilemmas and profit motives surrounding assisted dying. Disabled filmmaker Reid Davenport uncovers shocking abuses of power while amplifying the voices of the disability community fighting for justice and dignity in an unfolding matter of life and death.
The film has garnered strong recognition since its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year where it won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award. LIFE AFTER has been named a New York Times Critics Pick, received an Oscar nod from Deadline, and now continues its festival run with upcoming presentations at the Vancouver International Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, where it is nominated for the Grierson Award for Best Documentary.
“We are thrilled to bring Life After to audiences across Canada,” said Alexandra Roberts, Commissioning Editor, TVO Docs. “Reid Davenport’s filmmaking challenges assumptions and opens urgent thought-provoking storytelling that TVO is proud to champion.”
“This Canadian premiere marks a key milestone in the film’s global journey,” said Jess Reilly, Head of Sales and Acquisitions at Together Films. “We are delighted to partner with TVO, who share our commitment to showcasing stories that inspire debate and broaden perspectives.”
“It’s an honor to see Life After continue its journey with TVO,” said Reid Davenport, Director of Life After. “I look forward to bringing Elizabeth Bouvia’s story to Canadian audiences, and hope it provokes conversation about ableism, care, and disability justice – issues which resonate deeply in Canada and beyond.”
