From October to March, Together Films hosted a six-part virtual event series around Invisible Nation, a documentary centred on Taiwan’s democracy, autonomy and struggle for international recognition.
Each event was moderated by Invisible Nation director, Vanessa Hope, and brought together politicians, academics, journalists and activists to dig into the issues at the heart of the film.
Here’s a look back at the full series:
INVISIBLE NATION: How to Hold Onto Democracy
With Stacey Abrams (Former Georgia House Minority Leader), Jasmine Crockett (United States Representative) and Michelle Kuo (author and curator of painting and sculpture at the MoMA).
INVISIBLE NATION: How to Fight Authoritarianism
With Catherine Chou (Professor and Author of Revolutionary Taiwan: Making Nationhood in a Changing World Order), Van Jackon (author and host of the Un-Diplomatic Podcast) and Scot Nakagawa (co-founder of 22nd Century Initiative and ChangeLab, organizer and political strategist).
INVISIBLE NATION: Connecting Democracies Globally
With Enoch Wu (prominent figure in Taiwanese politics and Executive Director of Forward Alliance), Alyse Nelson (President and CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership) and Alysa Chiu (Deputy Director of the Department of International Affairs at the DPP).
INVISIBLE NATION: How to Promote Facts and Truth
With Chris Horton (journalist and author of Ghost Nation: The Story of Taiwan and Its Struggle for Survival) and Wen Liu (scholar, activist and author of Feeling Asian American: Racial Flexibility between Assimilation and Oppression).
INVISIBLE NATION: Why Taiwan Must Be Included in International Organisations
With Audrey Tang (Taiwan’s Cyber Ambassador and First Digital Minister) and Michael Fern (Cybercrime Prosecutor and Deputy District Attorney, Los Angeles County).
INVISIBLE NATION: Why Authoritarians Fear and Target Women and Democracy
To close the series, on International Women’s Day, Vanessa Hope was joined by Soraya Chemaly (activist and author of Rage Becomes Her, The Resilience Myth and All We Want Is Everything) and Anna Malaika Tubbs (author of The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation and Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden from Us).
This final conversation looks at the relationship between authoritarianism and the targeting of women — and why democratic movements and women’s rights are so often bound together.
All six events are available to watch now. If you haven’t seen Invisible Nation yet, you can find out more about the film here.
